Reflexology
What Reflexology is
Reflexology is a pressure point massage done on the feet. It is based on the principle that there are reflexes in the feet that correspond to every part of the body. It works by relaxing and restoring balance to these areas. Reflexology can also be done on the hands and ears but it is more effective on the feet since the reflexes are larger.
History of Reflexology
Manipulating the feet to restore balance to the body has been practiced in many different cultures for thousands of years; ancient Egypt , China , Africa, India , Russia and Japan . It was also practiced by the Native Americans.
Reflexology was developed from Zone Therapy which was created by Dr. William Fitzgerald, MD in the early 1900s. Reflexology was formally founded by Eunice Lingam who was a physical therapist. Her work took off where Fitzgerald left off. She developed her approach through trial and error, and worked with a large number of patients for a number of years. In 1938, she published her work in “Stories the Feet Can Tell”. She founded the International Institute of Reflexology which is still in existence today.
One of the reasons reflexology is necessary is that in ancient times people were barefoot most of the time and walked over rocks and hard surfaces which naturally stimulated these reflexes. Now that everyone wears shoes these reflexes do not get properly stimulated.
The most famous person to get reflexology was Princess Dianna who was getting treatments 3 times a week before her death. Theory Behind Reflexology
Problems in the feet can indicate problems in the body. A corn or callous over an area can indicate a problem with that area. A bunion often can indicate problems with the neck. Areas that are painful often indicate a problem in the body.
There are 5 zones that run vertically along each finger and toe and 3 major areas.
The toes and fingers represent the head area – the brain, sinuses, neck, eyes and ears. The upper part of the foot and hand represents the upper part of the body – the chest and shoulder area and the corresponding internal organs and glands. The lower part of the foot and hand represents the lower part of the body – the hips, stomach, and digestive system. The outer part of the foot represents the spine.
What a typical Reflexology session is like
Treatments last 30 to 60 minutes. The person does not have to undress. They only have to remove their shoes and socks. The practitioner may or may not use lotion.
