Prenatal Massage

What is Prenatal Massage?

Prenatal Massage is a gentle massage done on the mother-to-be to reduce stress, stimulate circulation and relieve the aches and pains of pregnancy. It uses traditional Swedish Massage techniques with an emphasis on the typical problem areas of pregnancy such as the lower back, legs and feet.

What are the Benefits of Prenatal Massage?

  • Increases circulation and blood flow
  • Reduces lower back pain
  • Helps to remove toxins from the body
  • Helps prevent edema
  • Reduces stress

What is a typical Prenatal Massage Session Like?

The massage is performed with the woman lying on her side. The woman undresses and lies on her side on a massage table underneath a sheet and is given pillows for under her head, between her knees and to lean against. Typically the back is uncovered and is massaged first, then the legs and feet, and then the arms and head. The woman will turn over on her other side and the same areas will be massaged. Up until about the fifth month of pregnancy, the woman can lie on her back, propped up with pillows. In later stages of pregnancy, the massage can only be performed with the woman lying on her side.

Some therapists use the Prego pillow, http://www.pregopillow.com/pregopillow.htm, which is a large, full body pillow which has a hollowed out area for the stomach. This pillow allows the woman to lie on her stomach. This is not however recommended for the last trimester.

There are many pressure points which are contra-indicated for prenatal massage, so the therapist must have proper training.

Some therapists will actually accompany the woman into the labor room to provide massage while the woman is in labor.

What Types of Training are Available for Prenatal Massage?

Prenatal massage is often taught as part of the curriculum at massage schools. Further training with CE credits is provided by the following company:
