How To Choose a Massage Therapy School
Choosing the right massage therapy school is very important to your success as a massage therapist. Here are some things you should take into consideration:
Minimum of 700 hours. Every state has different requirements, but at a minimum, you should not choose a program that is less than 700 hours. Even if you live in a state that is unregulated with no requirements, less than 700 hours of training is not enough to be successful and properly learn massage therapy.
Small class size. Ideally, you should want the class size to be 20 people or less. If there is more than that, you will not be able to get enough individual attention from the instructor and this will have a negative effect. You should ask if you can sit in on a class to see what it is like.
Clinic. You should choose a school that has a school clinic. Practicing massage on actual clients is the best way to improve as a therapist.
Externship. The school that you choose should have an externship program. This is where you go out to an actual massage business and work a certain number of hours as part of your education. This gives you first hand knowledge of exactly what it is like to work in certain environments and gives you more experience working on actual clients. You can also list this as experience on your resume and this will make it easier for you to find a good job while you are building your practice.
Job Placement. You should attend a school that has a job placement program. Many therapists will get a massage job for 6 months to a year before starting their own practice. Even if you start your practice immediately, getting a good massage job will help you to earn income while you are building your practice.
Business and Marketing. You should attend a school that teaches business and marketing classes along with massage. Excellent business and marketing skills are just as important to your success as excellent massage skills.
Continuing Education. You should choose a school that offers continuing education classes. Many state licences require you to have a certain number of continuing education units per year. You should ask if you can sit in on a continuing education class before you sign up. You will be able to meet and talk to other therapists who have gone to the school and ask them questions about the program.
