How to Use Different Types of Massage Oil and Lotion in Your Practice
Massage lotion. These are non-greasy and are good for deeper work. They do not work as well for Swedish type massage as they have to be reapplied to often.
Massage oils. Common oils used in massage are grapeseed, almond and jojoba oils. They make the skin slippery and are not good for deeper work. Oils are best for Swedish massage and hot stone massage. Many clients do not like oils because they feel they are too greasy.
Massage cream. This is a very heavy cream that is good for both Swedish massage and deep tissue. It lasts for a long time on the skin and does not have to be reapplied as often as a lotion. Higher quality massage creams absorb into the skin and do not leave a greasy residue.
Massage gel. This is a cross between a gel and a lotion. It has the glide of an oil but it is less greasy.
Analgesic balm. These are good for applying to muscular areas that have pain. They can also be used for deeper work.
